Q & A
Elisamarie sits rather quietly at the side of the room, although she busies herself with some sowing which she holds in her lap. Although she does not exude an air of warmth she does not appear cold either. Simply she blends into the background as a servant should.

Mercedes had timed it well, or so he thought. He'd waited until he'd seen the French ambassador leave, pull away in his carriage which trundled to the end of the street, becoming smaller and smaller, until it either crossed over the Thames bridge or turned away into Whitehall. With the Ambassador gone, Mercedes could enter the Embassy freely.

And so he did, the documents that needed stamping clutched in his hand as he pushed open the door and looked about the hallway. He fumbled his way to the Ambassador's study, but did not notice the woman sitting silently to one side.

Elisamarie watched him, taking from the sowing in her lap a little knife which she had concealed after it. She set down her work and got silently to her feet.
"Excuse me, sir, but what do you think you are doing here?" She asked, keeping the knife hidden in the palm of her hand.

He hadn't thought anyone was in the study, and so the sound of her voice caused him to jump and almost stumble as he turned to face him. "Ah, Madam. Forgive me, I did not see you there. Could you tell me please, if the Ambassador is in? I need his seal on some documents..."

"The Ambassador is out at the moment." She says pleasantly, stepping closer. "I'm surprised you did not see him leave, or that none of his staff stopped to tell you."

She wondered if this was the man the ambassador had been so keen to keep a secret from her. Strange, he did not look like Léon's type.

"He is? That is a pity. I should perhaps call on him at a more appropriate time. Could you tell me, Madam, when he will return?" He asks, keen to escape the Embassy as soon as possible, feeling very much like a deer in a net.

"I should not think for a while. He said he was visiting someone." She pauses, looking him over. No, not Léon's type at all. Perhaps she could have some fun with him. "I think he is visiting his whore."

Mercedes attempts to keep the surprise from his face. "Oh?" He laughs nervously, "Is it not a little too early in the day for that form of exercise? If you would excuse me, Madam Belmont, I will not keep you any longer..."

"Madam Belmont? You are mistaken sir, I am not the ambassadors wife." She says, offended by the suggestion. "And it would seem that for himself it is never too early." She studies his face, trying to see if he is hurt by the news.

"Ah." Mercedes manages, embarrassed and not sure how to extract himself from the conversation. "Forgive me, mademoiselle, I should not have assumed..." He gestures vaguely to her, and the room, "I thought..."

Another uncomfortable question, and his laugh is nervous to prove it. "For a man of his age, it is even more remarkable, don't you agree? Although I must now, unfortunately, be leaving..."
